Omusati-based Ongulumbashe Diamond Football Club were promoted to the Northwest First Division on Sunday after defeating Oshana’s Foxy Seniors 9-1 in their final match, which sparked an uproar from football fans in the Kunene region.
Over the weekend, Outjo’s Etoshapoort stadium hosted the four-team promotional playoffs in which Kunene champions Robber Chanties, who had home advantage, failed to advance, despite having the same number of points as the champions.
Chanties had a smaller goal difference of three than their opponents at five, allowing the Tsandi-based team to advance to the top tier.
Ongulumbashe Diamond, known for their relentlessness, smashed Foxy Seniors 9-1, an outcome that has elicited eyebrows and doubts on social media, with some fans claiming that the score was too big to be true, given Foxy’s prowess in their title run last season.
However, for Ongulumbashe Diamond, this is all in the distant past, as they celebrated their promotion after an exhilarating match that brought them one step closer to the Premier League.
The latter also defeated Robber Chanties 2-1 after losing 5-0 to Kaltes Wasser.
Chanties, their closest challenger for a promotion place, thrashed Kaltes Wasser 4-0, and also defeated Foxy Seniors 2-1.
Foxy Seniors is the only team that has failed to win any of their three matches, losing 9-1 to Ongulumbashe and 2-1 to Chanties.
The latter returned to Oshana with one point from a 1–1 draw with Kaltes Wasser.
Robber Chanties, Foxy Seniors and Kaltes Wasser will all return to their respective regional second divisions, whilst the Northwest stream needed only one win to join them.
The two-day competition featured Oshana Second Division champions Foxy Seniors, Otjozondjupa champions Kaltes Wesser, Kunene League winners Robber Chanties and Omusati region’s Ongulumbashe Diamond.
