Namibian fashion designer Mellisa Poulton is set to make history with the inaugural Met Gala in Namibia tomorrow.
The glamorous event will raise funds for the designer’s upcoming showcase at Paris Fashion Week, and support local artists and designers.
The Met Gala will feature a star-studded lineup, comprising renowned musicians and performers such as Lize Ehlers, Lioness, Cassidy, Jblack, Berthold, Litisha the guitarist, Ghetto Ballerina and Jericho.
Additionally, several local designers such as Dawn Diergaardt, Immanuel Tsatago Garoeb, Maggie and Aina Etuhole Shigwedha will showcase their latest collections.
The event will be held under the theme ‘La Dolce Vita,’ an Italian phrase meaning ‘the sweet life.’ Poulton seeks to incorporate Namibian elements into this theme, exploring the concept of ‘the sweet life and ‘luxury’.
“I hope that this Met Gala will help raise awareness and become a support system for local talent, where the money raised can be given to a good cause in supporting a designer or artist of choice. I hope to make an impact and difference in our art and fashion industry. This year’s Met Gala is to raise funds for my journey to Paris. However, the next gala will be there to support other local artists and designers where we can with the funds we raise,” she stated.
Beyond fundraising, Poulton divulged that the gala will create a platform for artists and designers to showcase their work, and network with industry professionals.
In addition, it will be an annual tradition, providing opportunities for upcoming talent and supporting local creatives.
“I hope to gain new opportunities, make an impact, and tell my Namibian story, and really go and make my country proud. My goal is to go and network, gain contacts, and sell my product to the European market,” she enthused.
