Defending champion African Stars will commence their title defence with a clash against Young African.
About eight matches are lined up for this weekend at various venues across the nation.
The first match between Ongos and Shandumbala outfit Tigers is set to be played tonight at Independence Stadium at 19h00.
The reigning champions have the same objective as last year’s one, which is to win the title.
They will take to the field to start their title defence against the equally determined team, Young African.
Speaking to this publication, African Stars gaffer Ronnie Kanalelo said his charges are ready to get the ground running.
“We haven’t rested since the end of the league,” he said.
“We’ve been training continuously, and have also been involved in various friendlies as well as the Confederation of African Football Champions League, so we’re well-prepared,” he added.
The Katutura-based outfit retained the league last season for the second time in a row after finishing with 64 points.
Kanalelo said their objective remains the same.
“I anticipate a tough season, as many teams have strengthened their squads during the transfer window,” he added.
“Every team is well-prepared and strong. For us, we remain ready and believe in our abilities, but our mission is clear, to win the league,” he added.
Cuca Tops look to win
Rundu Sport Stadium will be the centre of attention as newly promoted side Cuca Tops take on Julinho Sporting in an exciting match that promises fireworks.
Speaking to this publication, Ngondolf Mukoya of Cuca Tops said it is great to be back in top-flight league football after more than 20 years in the lower division.
Regarding tomorrow’s match, the coach said “We want to win the first match, and start the campaign on the right foot. We aim to collect maximum points in the opening game”.
“We’ve known Julinho for a long time, and have played against them in our recent pre-season matches. Our players are ready, both mentally and physically. I’m confident we can collect the much-needed points on Saturday”.
In other matches, coastal fans will be treated to a clash between Blue Waters and newcomers Blue Boys at Walvis Bay’s Kuisebmund Stadium.
PstBet Namibia Football Association Cup runner-up Young Brazilian will welcome Khomas Nampol, who finished third in the league last season at J Stephanus Stadium in another interesting encounter.
At Omulunga Stadium in Grootfontein, Eeshoke Chula Chula will host newly-promoted KK Palace in what is expected to be an entertaining match.
In Okahandja, Okahandja United will face Mighty Gunners at the Nau-aib Stadium.
On Sunday, Unam will take on Khomasdal outfit Civics at the Unam Stadium.
The match is scheduled for 15h00.
