Capricorn Eagles dominate China with 10-wicket victory

The Capricorn Eagles delivered a dominating performance against China, clinching a 10-wicket victory in the Hong Kong Women’s T20I series.

After losing the toss, Namibia was put in to field first, but their disciplined and aggressive bowling gave them control.

China opted to bat, but the Eagles’ bowlers proved relentless as China managed only 55/9 in 20 overs, with the Eagles’ attack delivering class and intensity. Senior bowler Irene van Zyl showcased her experience, taking two wickets while maintaining a phenomenal economy rate of 0.25.

However, it was Player-of-the-Match Wilka Mwatile who stole the show, claiming an incredible four wickets for only 6 runs in her four overs, completely knocking down China’s batting lineup.

In response, Namibia’s batters wasted no time. Captain Sune Wittmann led from the front with an unbeaten 48, blasting back-to-back boundaries and displaying ruthless aggression. Openers Sune and Edelle demonstrated growing synergy, making good decisions and applying pressure on the Chinese bowlers.

Their confident, attacking approach helped Namibia chase the target in just 4.1 overs, with 95 balls remaining.

Wittmann said they pride themselves on the brand fearless: “We pride ourselves on playing fearless cricket – expressing ourselves with confidence in the middle. Our goal is to carry this momentum beyond this tournament, into the Malaysia tour, and into the World Cup qualifiers next year.”

She said there are many positives to take from their match against Thailand: “We put up a great fight; our focus is to take the positives from each match. We must be disciplined in bowling.”

Wittmann further praised her opening partnership with Irene van Zyl: “We both have an aggressive nature. We have good structure and decision-making skills.”

This was Namibia’s second match in the series after losing to Thailand by 12 wickets in the first match on Wednesday.
