With the festive season fast approaching, the Namibian Police have noted with concern an increase in housebreaking cases, particularly in urban areas. In this regard, law enforcement have urged homeowners to remain vigilant and consider the following precautions and tips. 

Please follow these safety tips before leaving for the holiday: 

Inform the police in your jurisdiction. 

Notify a trusted neighbour about your absence to keep an eye on your property. 

Double-check that all doors and windows are securely locked. 

Arrange with a trusted relative to open the curtains and blinds during the day. 

Avoid exposing expensive items through windows. 

Consider security measures, such as an alarm system or surveillance camera. 

Secure your garage door with a strong lock to prevent unauthorised entry. 

Initiate or join crime fighting forums such as neighbourhood watch, Men and Women Network, Youth Against Crime etc. 

While on holiday: 

• Avoid posting or publicising your holiday plans and activities on social media. 

• Arrange with someone to empty your rubbish bin or wheelie bin. 

• Ensure outdoor lights are switched off during the day. 

After returning from holiday: 

• Inform the police of your 

return. 

• Inspect the interior and exterior of your home to confirm that nothing has been tampered with, disturbed, or stolen. 

By following the above tips, you ensure the protection of your property during the holiday season.
