The Uahekua Herunga Primary School this week received a cash donation of N$150 000 from local fishing company Okalongo Fishing to construct a classroom and storeroom.

The company’s chairperson Jesay Hanghuwo said they are committed to uplifting the standards of the school until such a time that all the basic amenities are provided for.

He pledged N$300 000 on behalf of the company towards the construction of the classroom and storeroom facilities, with N$150 000 received this week and the rest to be deposited next year.

The school is situated a few kilometres west of Otjorute in the Ruacana constituency of the Omusati region.

“This is part of our social responsibility, where we plough back into the community. The fish we are harvesting is for Namibians. Therefore, there is a need to share the profits with the rest of us,” he stated, while cautioning learners not to vandalise the facilities, but to preserve them for successive future generations.

Meanwhile, school board chairperson Laurentius Makana Iipinge, who is also the regional councillor of the Okalongo constituency, commended the company for the noble gesture.

“This is one of the responsibilities of companies to plough back into the community,” he observed.

Iipinge then appealed to all fishing companies to continue extending a helping hand when assistance is sought from them by schools, as part of their corporate responsibilities.

“This will help meet the government halfway for the interest and benefit of the Namibian child,” he stated.

Iipinge, who is of the opinion that there are some companies getting resources but who do not plough back into communities, urged all other companies and stakeholders to emulate Okalongo’s example and support remote rural schools which are in dire need of support.
