Mnangagwa eulogises Nujoma

The death of Namibia’s Founding President, Sam Nujoma, is a significant loss not only for Namibia, but also for the entire SADC region, the continent of Africa, and beyond, according to Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The Zimbabwean leader, while speaking at Nujoma’s memorial service in Windhoek on Friday, said Nujoma was just more than a political leader.

“His selfless efforts and unwavering commitment to justice, equality and freedom for his people and all of mankind will remain etched in our collective memory for posterity,” Mnangagwa said in his address to the mourners at the Independence Stadium during the last memorial service.

Nujoma, he said, had more than just a political vision. He added that he was “larger than life, a revolutionary icon, and a shining beacon of hope for the peoples of Africa.”

President Mnangagwa, who is also the SADC chairperson, was among the foreign dignitaries who came to pay their last respects to Nujoma, who died on 08 February and will be buried on Saturday at the Heroes’ Acre.

“We honour him as one of the founding fathers and a true Pan-African statesman. As the leader of our struggle, he inspired countless individuals to rise against colonial oppression and to fight for their rights, freedom, independence and dignity. His vision for a truly independent and liberated African people transcended borders, uniting peoples from across Southern Africa,” he said.

Throughout his time as Namibian president, Mnangagwa said that Nujoma championed policies that promoted social justice, economic development and regional cooperation.

“He understood that true liberation extends beyond mere political independence to encompass social equity and sustainable economic development. He fought and led his people, including the region, with outstanding valour and distinction,” he said.

The Zimbabwean leader, who had the privilege of working alongside Nujoma, said the late statesman had a wealth of wisdom.

“His ideological depth and understanding of a wide array of African and global issues was both fascinating and inspirational. His humility and unassuming demeanour, compassion and steadfastness were qualities that motivated all who knew him,” Mnangagwa stated.

He added that Nujoma left a lasting lesson that “leadership is not merely about power, but about serving the people with integrity, honour, sacrifice and humility.”

To honour Nujoma’s legacy, Mnangagwa said SADC countries must deepen collaboration and synergies among member states for a brighter and more prosperous future, especially for young people.
