Slow registration hits new Khomas boxing tourney …new deadline to give clubs more time

The much-anticipated AC Boxing Super Six boxing league, launched late last month with the intention of reviving amateur boxing in the Khomas region, is bogged down by slow registration by the clubs.

The founder and organiser of AC Promotions, Imms Moses, said the registration deadline of 8 May had been extended to 20 May due to the slow response from clubs.

Speaking from New York in the United States of America, Moses said while the initiative received overwhelming support during its launch, clubs have yet to translate that enthusiasm into formal registrations.

“The clubs are very slow in registering, and I see only a few clubs have submitted names of their boxers in the respective academies. Clubs such as John Benge Boxing Club, Unam Boxing Club and After-School Boxing Club have registered their boxers, and we expect more clubs to come forward.

“We hope to see those other clubs such as the MTC Nestor Tobias Academy, Salute Boxing and Nampol coming on board. We are looking forward to having everyone on the card, and we are working with the Khomas Federation, and are committed to ensuring we elevate boxing in the region,” he said.

The AC Super Six boxing league will feature amateur boxers from clubs in the region, competing across six weight divisions in a knockout format. Participating clubs are required to be in good standing with the Namibia Boxing Federation and the Khomas Boxing Federation, and have no outstanding affiliation fees.

Moses said the registration extension is not just about giving clubs more time, but about protecting the integrity and competitive value of the tournament.

“So far, we have not seen many responses, but we are looking forward to having every club on board because they are going to benefit immensely from this competition.”

“We are giving them until 20 May as we don’t want to leave anyone out, and I believe this initiative will drive boxing in the region to new heights,” he said.

Meanwhile, Joel Ngungu, the chairperson of the Khomas Boxing Federation, said they have not received any complaints from the clubs. However, he maintained that the extension would provide clubs with ample opportunity to register.

“We at the federation, have not received any complaints from the clubs regarding the registration process, and I believe it’s something to do with the clubs themselves,” he said.
