Top female golfers will this weekend convene and showcase their talent as the Namibia Amateur Ladies Golf Union hosts Windhoek Ladies Open tournament.
The tournament will be played at the Windhoek Country Club and Casino from 28-29 June.
This event is one of eight tournaments held across the country to establish a merit list, allowing the federation to properly select players for major international competitions.
The event is open to all female golfers in Namibia, including junior players who, for the first time, are permitted to compete with seasoned golfers.
Brenda Lens, a representative at the Namibia Golf Union (NGU), said the tournament is crucial for determining which players make the national squad.
“Such tournaments are very important. It’s where our golfers get to gain points, which eventually allows them to be part of the national teams. We are expecting a huge turnout this weekend, as it’s an important tournament among the female golfers,” she said.
In a brief interview yesterday, NALGU president Suené Venter said they are happy with how registration is going and that the event will live up to their expectations.
She added: “We are expecting a huge turnout, as we would like to have more entries for this specific tournament. It’s an important tournament. We are looking to have as many golfers as possible to ensure that we have a pool of players to choose from.
“We have sent out invitations to all affiliated member clubs from all regions to ensure that no one is left behind and everyone gets the opportunity to play in this prestigious tournament”.
