Kahirona’s quest for North West League championship heats up

Life Fighters’ brief stint in the North West First Division Football League could end this weekend as they just need one point to secure the title and return to the Namibia Premier League.

Speaking to Nampa this week, league administrator Lydia Hakandongo confirmed that the final league showdown will happen on Sunday, with all games starting at 12h00, at six venues in the far northern towns.

The Purple Army, or Kahirona as the Otjiwarongo outfit is equally known, could wrap up the title debate on Saturday with either a draw or a win when they take on Eleven Warriors at Omulunga stadium in Grootfontein, before their final showdown up north against the resilient Ongwediva City at the Mweshipandeka Stadium on Sunday.

Life Fighters will take on the road with their travelling companion Okakarara Young Warriors, a rival that equally remain in the title race should Fighters slip up. Although the league title will be determined in the last two matches, Life Fighters only need one point, and if Okakarara Warriors fail to earn a point on Saturday, the former will emerge victorious.

Life Fighters currently lead the league with 41 points, accumulated from 12 wins and five draws. Their closest rivals, Okakarara Young Warriors, trail with 35 points.

The Okakarara Warriors however cannot be dismissed too early. If Kahirona fail to win both of their games and Okakarara Warriors emerge victorious, the latter will be locked on 41 points with the league leaders.

However, the Okakarara Warriors will qualify over their rivals due to an advantageous head-to-head record, as they have defeated their rivals twice this season. The Warriors will on Saturday face Ongwediva City before settling matters against Eleven Warriors on Sunday in Grootfontein.

Both Kahirona and Okakarara warriors are aiming to return to the top division after their relegation last season.

Relegation concerns linger for teams ranked fourth to 12th, with just three points separating fourth-place Golden Bees (25 points) and last-placed Young Chiefs (22 points).

Saturday’s matches include African Motto versus Young Chiefs, Golden Bigs against Khuse Lions, and Onambula United taking on Golden Bees. On Sunday, Golden Bees and Outjo Football Academy will entertain Onambula United and Ongulumbashe Diamonds respectively, while African Motto host Young Chiefs and Golden Bigs face Khuse Lions.
