OMUTHIYA – The populace of Omuthiya and nearby villages will no longer have to travel long distances to access MTC services.
This comes after MTC on Friday opened its first mobile home in the northern town, bringing the company’s country-wide footprint of mobile shops to a total of 38.
Welcoming the new shop in the town, 58-year-old resident of Omuthiya, Sakaria Shivute, could not hold his excitement and gratitude.
He stated that they have long struggled with travelling to other regions to seek MTC services.
“Finally, I can say that we are recognised and part of the development. I will no longer have to spend money on transport fares to Ondangwa for MTC services. We are therefore happy and welcome MTC to our town,” he said.
Information Minister Emma Theofelus officiated the event.
“Government will continue to facilitate and create an enabling environment that encourages the provision of access to and delivery of the essential services to the people. Omuthiya is the capital town of the Oshikoto region. The residents there, just like any other, deserve access to quality information and communication technology services.
“I, therefore, urge MTC to continue its commendable effort of bringing inclusivity and bridging the digital divide. To the residents of this town, this is development on our doorstep. I urge you to guide and protect this facility because it belongs to you,” she said.
During the opening ceremony, the governor of Oshikoto region Sacky Kathindi said the new MTC shop in the town is more than a service point.
He added that it symbolises progress in the town’s development mission.
“This mobile home stands as a symbol of progress. It signifies an important shift in how we deliver essential services to our people, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. The geographical location should no longer be a limitation for accessing mobile services or digital tools that can uplift livelihoods. We, therefore, commend MTC for this bold and innovative step. The presence of this mobile home in Omuthiya brings hope to young entrepreneurs, students, farmers and small business owners who rely on connectivity to thrive,” Kathindi remarked.
MTC’s chief commercial officer Octivious Kahiya said “MTC’s intent and desire to have a presence in Omuthiya has been on the planning radar for nearly two years. What gave further motivation to this was the astonishing customer growth witnessed not only in Omuthiya but also in the region and from the surrounding constituencies”.
He added that MTC expects to open more mobile homes this year.
“Within this calendar year, we anticipate opening stores in the northeast part of the country due to the increase in business, as well as the small and medium enterprise sectors and the overall population growth. Emphasis will be given to Katima Mulilo, Divundu and Rundu,” he revealed.
