The Ministry of Health and Social Services received a donation of hospital beds from the Sovereign Military Order of Malta last week.
The donation, which includes 57 hospital ward beds and 15 orthopaedic beds, is valued at approximately N$1.5 million.
The beds are expected to significantly enhance the comfort and recovery of patients, especially those with orthopaedic and mobility-related conditions.
The ministry’s executive director Penda Ithindi expressed gratitude for the donation.
“These beds are not just pieces of furniture. They represent comfort, care and hope for countless patients who will rely on them during recovery. This is a tangible improvement in our capacity to provide quality healthcare services, particularly for the most vulnerable in our society,” he said.
The orthopaedic beds are expected to enhance care for patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
The ward beds will contribute to improving general patient experiences across various public hospitals and clinics.
Ithindi highlighted the long-standing humanitarian legacy of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
He praised the organisation’s global commitment to human dignity and service.
“The partnership between the two entities is seen as a model in mutual respect and a shared vision for a healthier future,” he stated.
Ithindi expressed eagerness to deepen cooperation in areas such as healthcare capacity building, emergency response preparedness and improving access to services in remote communities.
The ministry called on healthcare workers and administrators to maintain the beds responsibly.
He highlighted that the beds represent a major investment in the health sector and the collective responsibility to ensure their proper maintenance so they can continue to benefit Namibians for years to come.
