Netball showdown headed to Ongwediva

The northern town of Ongwediva will be buzzing with netball fever this weekend as rounds 12 and 13 of the MTC Netball Namibia Premier League take centre stage at the Oshana Gymnasium courts.

Fans can expect fierce battles, tactical masterclasses and plenty of drama as the league edges closer to its conclusion and the top three teams all have something big to prove.Currently sitting pretty at the summit are defending champions Namibian Correctional Services (NCS), who remain the team to beat.

Their clinical play, sharp shooting and disciplined defence have kept them consistent throughout the season, but the pressure is mounting as challengers circle.

Hot on their heels is the ever-determined Otjozondjupa Nampol, led by head coach Marvelous Khaebes, whose name seems to reflect his aspirations.

She admitted that while they are eyeing the title, the path will be smooth.“We want to take the opportunity to chase the title. However, there are many issues to iron out,” she said.

Those “issues include polishing their finishing, reinforcing their defensive communication, staying injury-free and sorting out management issues as the title race intensifies. Meanwhile, the surprise package of the season, Unam Ogongo, have turned heads with their youthful energy and fearless play.  Under the guidance of coach Taapopi Sakupaula, this student-driven side currently sits third and is refusing to be written off.

“Our plan is to fight to finish in the top three. To be honest, it’s not going to be an easy task,” he admitted.

“However, we’re planning on showing up to compete, giving it our all, working hard as a team and strategising to either maintain our position or climb up the ladder,” he added.

Their fast-paced and entertaining style has earned them praise and fans across the country.

With a mix of raw talent and academic discipline, Unam Ogongo could very well pull off an upset if they maintain their form.

A netball fan, Martha Ankambo said she has cancelled all her plans for the weekend and will be in Ongwediva watching, promising high stakes, electric and off the edge netball action.

“I am going to find a vuvuzela and ready myself for a netball showdown like no other,” she said.
