The stage is set for one of the most exciting weekends on Namibia’s youth sporting calendar, as the Capricorn Schools Netball League finals take place this weekend at the Windhoek Gymnasium and United Netball Courts.

Now in its ninth year, the league has grown into a nationwide platform for school netball, drawing more than 85 teams from 30 schools across eight regions. What started with only U/19 teams has developed into a six-division competition ranging from U/12 to U/19, giving young athletes across the country the opportunity to showcase their skills.

The finals weekend will begin with quarterfinal clashes today, where winners will advance to the top-four playoffs, while those who lose will compete for fifth to eighth place. Saturday’s semifinals and finals will culminate in a celebratory prize-giving ceremony at 15h00, where Capricorn Group will award medals and trophies to the top three teams in each age group.

Marlize Horn, Group Executive: Brand and Corporate Affairs at Capricorn Group, said the league reflects the company’s commitment to investing in youth and community development.

“Corporate Namibia has a responsibility to invest back into the communities, and sport is a very important component of the community. Participation in sport is vital for youth development as it provides an opportunity for the youth to develop various skills such as teamwork, resilience, and decision-making under pressure,” Echoed Horn.

The competition has not only grown in numbers but has also produced several players who have gone on to represent Namibia at the national level. With netball being the most widely played women’s sport globally, the league continues to serve as a breeding ground for future stars.

Liezel Garbers, chairperson of the Capricorn Schools Netball League, said the excitement around the finals showcases how deeply the sport resonates with Namibian youth.

“This year, 87 teams took part across six age groups, from U/12 to U/19, and the finals weekend is where the girls play their hearts out for their schools. It’s always an exciting and special occasion.” Garbers said.-hilmanalupe@gmail.com
