A four-month-old baby boy has died after being accidentally struck on the head with a brick by his mother, who was allegedly trying to hit her boyfriend after finding him with another woman.

The tragic incident occurred on last week around 23h00 at Ankambo village in the Oshana region.

Oshana police commander, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, confirmed the incident.

It is alleged that the man, who has two girlfriends, was earlier seen with both women at the Onamutai cucashops. Later that evening, he went to sleep at a house where his sister works as a domestic worker.

According to the police, while the man was sleeping in his sister’s room, the second girlfriend, who has a baby with him, arrived and opened the room, where she found the man and the other woman asleep. The man woke up and attempted to stop her from entering.

Police said the mother was carrying her baby on her back at the time. During the struggle, the baby fell to the ground and began crying. The father picked up the baby to calm him down, but the mother continued trying to force her way into the room to confront the other woman.

In an effort to prevent further confrontation, the man placed the baby on the ground. The mother allegedly picked up a brick and attempted to hit the man. Unfortunately, the brick slipped from her hand and struck the baby on the head.

Realising the baby was injured, she rushed him to Onandjokwe Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say no arrests have been made. A case of murder has been opened, but preliminary investigations found no clear intent. The docket will be sent to the prosecutor general for a decision.
