Personality of the week – Twin goalkeepers united by passion, purpose

Growing up in Khomasdal, Windhoek, twins Johan and Steffi have always shared more than just a birthday.

They share a deep passion for football, a strong sense of discipline and an unbreakable sibling bond that continues to shape their journey both on and off the field.

From the age of three, the pair were inseparable, always outdoors, kicking or throwing something around.

“We were always very active from the beginning. Our first sport skill learned was hockey. Naturally, with our cousins, we played football everywhere until our mother took us to Athletic Club Football Academy (ACFA) at age seven. It’s really quite fun and filled with days of us running around with a ball,” Steffi recalled.

Their mother enrolled them at the ACFA, now known as Julinho Athletic FC Academy, where they quickly developed structure, teamwork and a love for competition.

Johan initially started as a centre-back, but a turning point came during a memorable game.

“We played against Ramblers, and I just felt calm when the ball came to me. That’s when I knew I wanted to play the beautiful position,” he said.

Steffi, on the other hand, found her calling in goal a bit earlier.

“I was ten years old, and we were playing against SKW in the Liqui Fruit League. I stopped all the shots and thought to myself, ‘I can actually go pro one day,’” she said.

Over the years, the twins have grown into confident leaders, both serving as captains for their respective Khomas Regional U/15 teams. Steffi describes her leadership style as leading by example, being on time and motivating teammates to stay focused, while Johan takes a more relaxed approach.

“I just tell them to do what they’re good at and play with happiness and confidence,” he said.

While football is at the heart of their lives, both twins are well-rounded individuals. Steffi also plays hockey and dreams of becoming a veterinarian one day. Johan enjoys athletics and listening to motivational podcasts.

He hopes to study sport management in the future.

For Steffi, proud moments include being named to the 2024 CAF Schools National Team.

Johan recalls saving a top-corner shot in a high-stakes rivalry match that secured victory for his team.

Despite sharing the same position, there is no rivalry between them.

“We inspire each other and help each other grow,” said Steffi.

Johan added, “Having a sister you can relate to in a sport is one of the best things in my life, it’s something I’ll never take for granted”.

Both twins dream of wearing the national colours one day and their journey continues to prove that talent, teamwork and family support can turn shared dreams into extraordinary achievements.
