The African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 hosted a stakeholder meeting on Wednesday evening in Windhoek.

The meeting engaged leaders of sport in the country to explain what Region 5 does, discuss strategies for strengthening partnerships, advance regional cooperation, explain programmes and how the federations can play a role and benefit from said programmes.

CEO of the AUSC Region 5 Stanley Mutoya said such meetings are very important in linking up with the countries, as it grows the relationships between the countries, particularly the leaders of sport and Region 5.

“These consultations help us in rolling out awareness of the various programmes and the mandate that we, as Region 5, have,” he stated. Mutoya announced that, starting next year, the 12th edition of the Region 5 games will feature qualification standards.

“This will ensure performance standards raise the level of the games and prepare our athletes for bigger championships,” he said.

He encouraged stakeholders to embrace innovation and collaboration to ensure that sport remains a tool for development, unity and social change across Southern Africa.

Speaking at the meeting, director of sport Jo-Ann Manuel stressed the importance of peace as the foundation of all sporting excellence.

He highlighted the need to value and accommodate refugees in the Region 5 countries, noting that inclusion and compassion strengthen unity.

“We must welcome and support one another. That’s how we build a stronger, more united Region 5,” Manuel said.
