During the unprecedented hard times of Covid-19 outbreak numerous newly established businesses ranging from online marketing businesses and local business ventures have been established. No one was really prepared for this crisis and no one could have wished for it either. During these times I am pretty sure that most of us realised that we are still useful to society and that some of the things we consider to be essentials like liquor – are draining us.
Not only has an increase in economic activities been denoted but social beliefs have been put to the test too. Many people have turned to God and many have realized that humility and humbleness should become the new norm.
One may ask, “How would the world be if we were all one big family fighting against one enemy (in this case Covid-19)?” Of course Covid-19 will wipe us out if we play around like how the Italians first did. Many have come to a realisation that no matter how great, rich or superior you may think you are, there are certain things in life you cannot do on your own.
It is during these times that I see people working together and really paying attention to what is happening around them. No one needs to be applauded since there are still rotten tomatoes that need to be uprooted – those that still do not want to abide by the Covid-19 preventative measures and also those that are defiling the quarantine measures and escaping from the facilities.
Furthermore, it is during this time that I am seeing Namibian people caring for one another and trying very hard to eliminate all sorts of racial discrimination. Through the ‘Black Lives Matter’ slogan one can evidently see how Namibian people are condemning police brutality and inhumane brutality at large. If only we could remain united like this, Namibia will be a desired home for many if not for all.
In addition, one can also see political parties and the government fighting for the well-being of the masses which should be the norm – fighting against poverty and exhausting all means to eradicate it. The probability of these above occurring prior to the outbreak of Covid-19 was 0.0009.
We cannot be happy that Covid-19 is in our midst but we can say that every dark cloud has a silver lining. Obviously not every lesson in life comes the easy way because as humans sometimes we fail to understand the vitality of those lessons. The current economic standing of our country is bad but our social standing is close to 80% satisfactory. As the only way to move forward we as citizens of Namibia need to let go of our pride and egos. Covid-19 is our common enemy and not ourselves. Poverty, hunger and poor sanitation are some of the problems we need to fight and not ourselves. It’s not about politics; it is about human lives and intra-personal relationships. Let us support one another.
