City of Windhoek CEO Robert Kahimise said the City has been working hard to find lasting solutions to the water supply interruption in Groot Aub.
In a media statement availed to Nampa on Tuesday, Kahimise said it has come to the attention of the City that Groot Aub settlement in the Windhoek Rural Constituency has not had water for the past eight days.
“We, therefore, would like to clarify the issue of water challenges being experienced in Groot Aub,” he said.
He stated that it is important to note that Groot Aub’s water-supply interruption has been a recurring problem since the settlement was under the management of Khomas Regional Council and that the City has been working hard to find lasting solutions since it was handed the responsibility to take over its management in 2017.
Kahimise said while working on a lasting solution, interim measures were introduced to ease the problem.
“The City installed seven water tanks in Groot Aub to supplement the water from boreholes in the area to ensure that the community has sufficient water, particularly in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he stated.
Kahimise noted that with the challenge of the City having only one mobile water tanker that is used to fill up all other installed tanks within the municipal boundaries, a schedule was set to ensure that all tanks are re-filled at least once a week and the Groot Aub tanks are refilled every Friday.
He further said to ensure that the settlement does not run out of water, the City of Windhoek withdrew and availed one of its fire engines to assist in transporting water to Groot Aub three times a week.
“This is a temporary measure while we are looking for further assistance with possible tankers that will help us to provide water frequently,” he said.
Kahimise concluded by saying the City is currently busy rehabilitating old boreholes at Groot Aub and these will be operational soon.
