OSHAKATI – The second edition of the Top Score Oshiwana 7-a-side soccer championship was launched at Oshakati in the Oshana region on Tuesday.
This year’s tournament has attracted 79 soccer teams, compared to 46 teams registered for the tournament last year and kicks off on Thursday until Sunday at the Uukwangula Sports Stadium, some 10km outside Oshakati on the way to Okahao in the Omusati region.
The tournament’s main promoter, Jackson Felisberto da Silva, told the launch function that besides 69 youth clubs, 10 legendary teams are registered to contest for a trophy and medals in a separate category.
The teams/clubs are from different regions of Namibia.
The Top Score brand of Namib Mills sponsored the tournament to the tune of more than N$94 000.
Winners of the tournament will scoop a top prize of N$12 000, gold medals and a floating trophy, the runners-up will get N$8 000 and silver medals and the third team is to walk away with N$5 000 and bronze medals.
“Sport is meant for entertainment, physical fitness and mental development, as well as to unite people as friends,” said Oshana governor Elia Irimari, speaking during the launch.
He said sport keeps the body active and healthy.
Ongwediva-based Mayweather Trading Football Club (FC) is the tournament’s defending champion.
