ONAMBUTU – Liberation struggle hero and former Swapo Party Elders’ Council secretary Kanana Hishoono died on Wednesday evening.
Yesterday, New Era visited his home in Onambutu, in Ohangwena region where veterans of the liberation struggle, family members, and villagers gathered to pay their respects.
Many described the late Hishoono as a true liberation struggle hero who believed in unity and fairness.
Former president Hifikepunye Pohamba was among the mourners who visited his homestead.
Hishoono served as a political advisor to Founding President Sam Nujoma and Pohamba.
Speaking at his homestead yesterday, former Namibian ambassador to China, Elia Kaiyamo, described Hishoono as a strong man who fought for the independence of the country.
“He was like a brother to me. He was our torch that led us in the Swapo Party,” he said.
Kaiyamo further said Hishoono would be remembered for his hard work and dedication.
Also speaking to our publication, liberation struggle veteran Katrina Liswani said Hishoono was a peaceful man who taught them a lot when they were in Angola.
“He led and guided us. We lost a true hero who believed in honesty,” she said.
She added that Hishoono taught them politics, as he was their mentor, describing the now departed war veteran as very intelligent.
Another liberation struggle veteran, Marx Nekongo, said Hishoono was a hero who always aimed for peace.
“He did not like bad things. He liked order and approached people in a good manner,” he said.
Nekongo added that Hishoono’s legacy would always be remembered and honoured.
Hishoono’s eldest child, Hilya Ndinombili Hishoono (70), described her father as a man who did not discriminate against anyone.
“He raised many children from outside the family. He loved everyone as his own. He taught Christian values,” she said.
Hilya added that their father taught them to work hard, the importance of education and respect for elders.
Meanwhile, Swapo secretary general Sofia Shaningwa, in a separate interview, remembered Hishoono as a dedicated comrade who never wavered.
Neighbours also described Hishoono as a man who assisted people in the village.
The struggle hero is survived by his wife and eight children. Funeral arrangements are still underway.
