Plans underway for crocodile park in Rundu

RUNDU – Local entrepreneur Peter Immanuel is transforming the Maria Mwengere cultural, environmental and recreational facility, popularly known as ‘Likongoro/Ekongoro’, into a hub for wildlife education and tourism.

The businessman has announced plans to establish a dedicated crocodile park aimed at bridging the gap between the community and the dangerous aquatic predators inhabiting the Kavango river.

“There are many incidents of crocodile attacks in our region; some can be prevented if people are educated. Schools will have the opportunity to bring learners for day tours to learn about feeding seasons and behavioural traits that will help them stay safe near the river,” Immanuel stated.

While the planned park represents a significant business venture, Immanuel emphasised that the primary driver is public safety, education and employment creation.

Construction works are well underway, as the primary pond has been constructed and is ready for use, and the project has already secured a lease through the directorate of education and the Kavango East Regional Council.

“Although initially the plan was to purchase crocodiles from Otjiwarongo, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has offered to donate the animals. However, the project is currently facing minor delays as the ministry finalises the logistics for the donation and transfer of the crocodiles,’’ he said.

Currently, residents of the Kavango West and East regions often travel hundreds of kilometres to Otjiwarongo to see crocodiles in a controlled environment. Immanuel aims to change that by making these “dangerous aquatic beasts” accessible and visible to locals and tourists right in Rundu.

Unlike in the river, where crocodiles remain expertly camouflaged for safety, the park will ensure visitors can observe them safely and consistently.

Immanuel, who already manages Rundu Beach and local boat cruises, sees this as a natural extension of the town’s tourism offerings.
