WSL Round 2 to test title ambitions

WSL Round 2 to test title ambitions

Round 2 of the FNB Women’s Super League (WSL) gets underway this weekend, with several key fixtures expected to provide an early indication of which teams are ready to assert themselves as genuine contenders this season.

FC Ongos Ladies head coach Shama Gure says his side approaches their Round 2 encounters against NUST Babes and V-Power Angels with a clear mindset, describing the fixtures as crucial tests of the team’s development.

“These are not just two fixtures; they are two important tests of our identity, discipline, and growth as a team,” Gure said.

He highlighted the contrasting challenges posed by their opponents, noting that NUST Babes has developed into a well-organised and energetic side, while V-Power Angels bring a more physical and intense style of play.

“Both matches will require maximum concentration, tactical discipline, and maturity from us. There is absolutely no room for complacency,” he added.

Gure stressed that while results remain important, his primary focus is on measurable progress in key performance areas.

“As head coach, the ambition is simple but firm: Progress. Results matter, yes, but so does how we apply ourselves, our decision-making, communication on the pitch, defensive solidity, and the courage to play with purpose. As a team, our goal is to compete with confidence, respect every opponent, and impose our style of play,” he said.

He believes the weekend provides an opportunity for FC Ongos Ladies to set the tone for the remainder of the season.

“This weekend is about showing that we are serious, hungry, and committed to continuous improvement. If we get that right, the results will take care of themselves,” Gure concluded.

Meanwhile, V-Power Angels head coach Risto Shikomba admits his side will be under pressure heading into the weekend, having set the early pace as log leaders.

“There is some pressure because we are leading the log and the supporters expect strong performances from us. However, I am very positive that we can collect maximum points this weekend,” he said.

Shikomba pointed to improved fitness levels within his squad and new additions as key factors boosting confidence. “We have a good squad, the players’ fitness has improved significantly, and we have also strengthened the team by signing three additional players. We will go all out in both matches,” he said.

He also warned that their opponents will be highly motivated, having dropped points against V-Power in the second leg of last season. “Both Julinho and Ongos lost points against us last season, so we know they will be eager to make amends. We are aware of that, and we will be ready for the challenge,” he added.

Elsewhere, Julinho Athletic Ladies head coach Nicky Gaweseb says his side is determined to register positive results against V-Power and NUST Babes.

“The team is motivated, and hopefully we can register our first win and, if possible, collect maximum points. We will remain humble and approach every match as a final,” he said.

After finishing seventh last season, Gaweseb believes his team has room for improvement.

“Last season we ended in seventh position, and our aim is to improve on that this season. That is our motivation moving forward,” he said.

Head coach of Arrows Ladies Etoo Nakale believe it’s going to be very competitive matches. “We will take each match with very serious aim. We trust that this time around there won’t be referee issues, especially towards traveling teams,” he said.

Arrows will face Mighty Angels and African Stars Queens.
