All roads lead to Swakopmund tomorrow as the 35th annual Rössing National Marathon prepares to host about 4 500 runners and fun walkers for one of Namibia’s premier road running events.
Rössing Uranium, in partnership with the Swakop Striders Running Club, will once again bring together athletes, fitness enthusiasts, families and supporters from across the country and beyond for the highly anticipated coastal race.
Rössing Uranium corporate communication manager Daylight Ekandjo said the organisers are excited ahead of the event, which continues to grow in popularity and stature each year.
“We are truly looking forward to hosting runners and visitors in Swakopmund for this year’s Rössing National Marathon. This event is more than just a race. It is a celebration of wellness and community spirit,” she said.
Ekandjo added that the marathon provides a platform for athletes to test their endurance while creating an inclusive space where families and supporters can enjoy a vibrant and energetic atmosphere along the coast.
“We are proud to once again create a platform where athletes can challenge themselves while families and supporters come together in a positive and energetic environment,” she noted.
Apart from the competitive marathon races, the programme will also include a 5km fun walk aimed at families, social walkers and community members of all fitness levels who want to be part of the excitement.
Registration for the fun walk remains open today from 16h00 to 20h00 and tomorrow morning between 06h30 and 08h00. Ekandjo urged Swakopmund residents to take note of increased activity around the Tennis Court parking area in Strand Street, where the event will be centred.
Residents can expect early-morning noise, road use and larger crowds.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate the community’s understanding and support as we host this national sporting event,” she said.
Nine-time champion of the race Alina Armas will be returning to the marathon this year, saying she has been preparing since January and is going out to have a good time and, hopefully, to defend her title.
