Three horse race intensifies between Chula, Stars, Ongos …NPFL title battle enters final stretch

With only six matches remaining for the top three in the Namibia Premier Football League season, the race for the title is shaping up to be a thrilling three-way contest between Eeshoke Chula Chula, current log leaders, defending champions African Stars and FC Ongos.

The three sides are separated by only four points in the standings, setting the scene for a dramatic finish as each team fights to win the championship.

As things stand, Chula Chula lead the log with 47 points from 23 matches, while African Stars sit close behind on 46 points, only one point adrift of the summit. Ongos remain firmly in contention in third place with 43 points, meaning any slip-up from the two teams above could quickly alter the title race.

Tough fixtures ahead

All three title contenders face demanding schedules in the final stretch, with several encounters against the same opponents.

Chula will take on Unam FC, Ongos, African Stars, Khomas Nampol, Okahandja United and Bucks Buccaneers in their remaining fixtures.

Defending champions African Stars are set to face Bucks Buccaneers, Okahandja United, Chula Chula, KK Palace, Unam and Ongos.

Meanwhile, Ongos still have matches against Chula Chula, KK Palace, Bucks Buccaneers, Okahandja United, Khomas Nampol and African Stars.

The fact that the top three sides will largely be competing against the same opponents means consistency and composure will be critical in determining who ultimately lifts the trophy.

Stars determined to defend crown

Head coach Elemu Agnus of African Stars said the team remains determined to fight for the title as the season enters its decisive phase.

“We are going to continue fighting for the title, and each game we play now is crucial to maximise the points,” he said.

He added that the team’s focus will be on tightening their defence while making better use of the chances they create.

“We will make sure not to give away easy goals to teams and make sure we score many of those chances we always create each game.” According to Agnus, the players stay focused and motivated as they recognise the responsibility of representing one of the country’s most successful clubs.

“The players are focused and motivated, knowing the pride and ambition of the team is to win the league, and only six matches stand between us and that success.”

Despite the pressure of the title run-in, the coach believes his squad has the experience to handle the situation.

“Yes, the pressure is high, but we have mature players who have been in this situation before, and they know how to absorb pressure. We have players able to rotate around to make our tactical behaviour work. We will fight every game,” he added.

Ongos keeping their focus

On the other end, Ongos head coach Ronnie Kanalelo insists his side will remain grounded as the campaign approaches its final stages.

“We are just going to continue taking each game as it comes. I always tell my players that we can only control our space and nobody else’s,” he said.

Asked about key areas the team needs to improve to secure positive results in the remaining fixtures, Kanalelo said the team remains committed to its established approach.

“We are solely focused on our game model and nothing else. Our focus is on maintaining what we have been doing. There is no time to think about key areas to improve, that’s for next season.”

He added that while the league is entering a critical stage, his side will not be distracted by the pressure surrounding the title race.

“We are indeed at a critical stage, but that’s more on the two bulls from different farmers to resolve their situations,” he said.

Kanalelo also noted that his squad depth limits major tactical rotations. “We have a small squad with varying qualities, and we operate within our means.

I’m unsure why, suddenly, Ongos is in contention for the league title. We are a team that has struggled to win games throughout the season, and that dynamic hasn’t changed,” he added.
