Indoor hockey league to resume

The Namibia Indoor Hockey League continues this weekend at Wanderers Sports Grounds and the MTC Dome, with six men’s teams and five women’s teams participating at the highest level of indoor hockey between premier, reserve and development teams.

The league started on 28 February and will conclude on 7 May 2026, serving as a pathway to national teams.

Last season, the Saints’ men’s and women’s teams won the Premier League titles.

In the opening round of fixtures last month, Windhoek Old Boys defeated Saints 2 with a 9-1 victory, shocking many hockey fans.

Former Saints player Brynn Cleak made a notable debut in Old Boys’ colours, marking his first appearance with a goal.

Defending champions Saints 1 fought hard to defend their crown as they defeated School of Excellence 7-2, with Liam Bruys opening the scoring for Saints and finishing the match with a hat-trick.

In the women’s premier league, Saints and Windhoek Old Boys squared off in a highly anticipated match where Old Boys stunned the defending champions by taking a two-goal lead.

Saints, however, fought back strongly to reclaim control and eventually secured a 4-3 victory.

This weekend’s schedule promises even more action as the defending men’s champions, Saints 1, face Windhoek Old Boys in a match that could dictate the early momentum of the title race.

Saints Hockey Club coach Christo du Raan said the upcoming clash between Saints and Windhoek Old Boys Hockey Club is one that the team is eagerly anticipating.

“The last time the two sides met, it was in the indoor league final, and it was a match that went right down to the final seconds. After a hard-fought contest, we were fortunate to come out on top and reclaim the number one spot from Old Boys,” du Raan recalled.

As history has shown, matches between these two teams are always competitive and played at a very high intensity. The upcoming fixture is expected to be no different.

“For us, at Saints, it’s an exciting opportunity for some of our young and upcoming players to test themselves against a very experienced Old Boys side. It’s that mix of youth, pace and experience that should make for a great spectacle,” said du Raan.

Fans can expect a thrilling weekend of indoor hockey as teams continue their push for early dominance in the league standings.
