Carpentry puts bread on family table

Manuel Tomas, the owner of Manu Joinery, has turned a family trade into a livelihood that supports not only himself but his entire family.

Based in Windhoek’s Ombili settlement, Tomas’ joinery and carpentry business kicked off in 2014 after taking over from his father, who had been running the same type of business before retiring. Now, what began as a family trade has since become a source of income that allows Tomas to care for his loved ones.  As the eldest sibling responsible for supporting his family, Tomas said continuing the business was not just a choice, but a responsibility.

“As the person who looks after everyone in my family, I was forced to continue with the business my father once started. Instead of going to take somebody’s things or going to steal, I went to hustle to get the bread,” Tomas said.

Tomas supports four siblings and other family members and says the carpentry work has helped him ensure that his family’s needs are met.

To strengthen his skills, Tomas obtained a Level 3 qualification in woodwork and joinery from the Windhoek Vocational Training Centre. The training helped him refine his craftsmanship and improve the quality of the furniture he produces for clients.

Through Manu Joinery, Tomas produces a variety of household furniture and fittings.

His work includes tables, chairs, bedside tables, drawers, frames, headboards, cupboards and ceilings. He says each piece is carefully crafted to meet customers’ needs while maintaining durability and good workmanship.

Despite the challenges of running a small business, Tomas remains committed to growing his enterprise while continuing to support his family. Those interested in his services can contact Tomas at 081 707 3475.
