The Office of the Kunene Governor, in conjunction with Agra ProVision, recently conducted a three-day workshop on the beekeeping training programme in Opuwo.
The training was aimed at empowering local communities with skills in honey-production by Christo Brisley as a facilitator from Agra ProVision.
This training consisted of 15 participants.
They were introduced to modern beekeeping techniques and basic financial literacy to help them manage honey production businesses. After completion of training, participants received a training manual, protective gear and essential beekeeping equipment, as well as certificates.
The programme is an initiative of the governor of the region, Vipuakuje Muharukua, who sees the potential in beekeeping and honey production as a lucrative business in today’s world.
He is optimistic that the participants will be able to expand to 15 beehive outlets.
“These 15 people, when they are done training, they will join Kunene Capital, where we will mentor them and look for a market for their honey produce in the region and beyond for their livelihood,” Muharukua said.
According to the governor, they are planning to have 200 beehive outlets, and they will do this after the production of the first group have sold their produce, and the profit will be used to train others soon across the region.
Beekeeping is a profitable business.
Muharukua hopes it will deliver residents of Opuwo and the Kunene region from poverty.
