The Namibia Powerlifting Association held a successful deadlift challenge on Saturday at CrossFit Sold Out in Windhoek, attracting a competitive group of athletes and highlighting the sport’s increasing local interest.
A total of 18 athletes participated in the event, including eight female competitors, reflecting a steady rise in women’s involvement in powerlifting.
The competition saw participants pushing their limits, with several athletes achieving impressive personal bests and demonstrating remarkable strength across different weight categories.
Founding member of the association, Alexandra Limmer, expressed satisfaction with the turnout, noting that although powerlifting remains a relatively small sport in Namibia, events like these are vital for raising its profile. “We are very happy with the attendance, especially considering that powerlifting is still developing in terms of popularity in Namibia,” she said.
Limmer highlighted the diversity of participants, pointing out that the competition featured both seasoned athletes and newcomers eager to test themselves on the platform.
“We had a 73-year-old master entry, who is a former Namibian and South African champion. We also had newcomers to the sport competing for the first time,” she added. She further expressed her enthusiasm about the growing number of female athletes participating, describing their involvement as a positive move towards inclusivity and development in the sport.
Beyond the competition itself, Limmer emphasised the strong sense of community within powerlifting, describing it as a sport built on mutual support and encouragement.
“All the athletes are team players and we work together to support each other. The powerlifting community is like a family; we are there for each other, and it is probably the only sport where you cheer on your opponent,” she said.
The association is also focusing on developing the sport at the grassroots level, with an emphasis on identifying and nurturing young talent.
Looking ahead, the Namibia Powerlifting Association aims to host more events across the country to further promote the sport and attract new participants.
The organisation continues to encourage individuals of all ages and fitness levels to get involved, whether competitively or recreationally, as part of its mission to grow Namibia’s powerlifting community.
