The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the //Kharas region has opened a case of dealing in prohibited dependence-producing drugs after it uncovered and seized drugs worth N$5.4 million at the Noordoewer border post on Friday.
A weekend crime report issued by NamPol on Sunday indicated that a white Mahindra vehicle with a Windhoek registration was intercepted at the border post whilst entering Namibia from South Africa.
It is alleged that the vehicle was placed through a scanner for inspections when foreign objects were detected hidden in its compartments.
“A Namibian male suspect disappeared after realising that the border control officials noticed foreign objects hidden in his car. A total of 104 parcels of skunk cannabis drugs, valued at N$5 450 000, were retrieved from the vehicle, seized and the vehicle impounded,” it read.
Records obtained from the Namibian Traffic Information System (NaTIS) reveal that the vehicle belongs to a Tanzanian national, who lives in Namibia.
The man, police say, denied ownership of the car upon police inquiry.
“The suspect is still at large, and police investigations continue,” reads the report.
