The Namibian-based Barloworld/Cymot pro cycling team delivered an impressive performance at the recent Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) CEO Cycling Challenge in Botswana, securing top positions in one of the region’s most competitive road cycling events.
The demanding 120km race, which stretched from Kanye to Magobane, attracted more than 400 cyclists from across Southern Africa and featured some of the region’s top cycling talent.
Leading the charge for the Namibian outfit was Petrus Hanga, who claimed overall victory after a dominant ride from start to finish. Hanga also secured first place in the U/23 category following an aggressive early attack that proved decisive.
Hanga broke away from the peloton alongside three Botswana riders during the early stages of the race. The leading group maintained its advantage throughout the event, eventually opening a four-minute gap over the chasing pack before crossing the finish line six minutes ahead of the main peloton.
The Namibian team continued to shine throughout the race, with Khotsofalang Rakaota producing another strong performance to finish fourth overall and second in the Under-23 category.
Simon Keita also impressed, securing a place inside the overall top ten while finishing fourth in the Elite category. Willbard Shoopala added to the team’s success by finishing among the top ten riders overall and claiming second place in the Sub-Veterans category.
Kabelo Makatile completed the team’s strong showing as the riders proudly represented Namibia at the prestigious regional cycling event.
Team manager Ebben-Ezer praised the riders for their determination and teamwork throughout the race.
“The team showed great discipline and commitment from the beginning of the race, and we are proud of the results achieved against strong regional competition,” he said.
Following their successful campaign in Botswana, the Barloworld/Cymot Pro Team is now preparing for upcoming races in Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Botswana and Eswatini as part of a busy regional cycling calendar.
The team will also continue competing in local Namibian road cycling events as they build momentum for the remainder of the season. -newsroom@nepc.com.na
