The Hatika Adult Education Centre continues to stand the test of time, as it strives to impact the community by providing literacy and practical skills to adults who previously had limited access to education.
The Centre, founded by pedagogue Wilfred Mbamba (32) in 2019, has become a platform for education, empowerment, and social development.
Through courses such as English, Afrikaans, computer literacy, financial literacy, sign language, arts and crafts, small business management, nail technician training, and driving license lessons, community members gain knowledge and skills that improve their employability and self-confidence.
“The centre continues to grow every year, and the support received from organisations such as the Capricorn Foundation has also helped the centre improve its facilities and learning resources, allowing it to serve more students effectively,” said Mbamba on the centre that recently celebrated its seventh birthday anniversary with a 7-kilometre run.
He added that the Hatika Adult Education Centre has had a significant positive impact on the community it serves, particularly in the Goreangab informal settlement in Windhoek. “The centre also contributes to economic empowerment. Many learners acquire entrepreneurial and vocational skills that enable them to start small businesses, seek employment opportunities, or improve their daily livelihoods. Adult education has been widely recognised as a tool for poverty reduction and sustainable community development,” said the teacher.
He said the centre inspires hope and personal growth within the community, adding that many adults who may have lost educational opportunities regain confidence and motivation through learning.
“This not only benefits individuals but also positively influences families and young people in the community by promoting a culture of education and lifelong learning,” he said. An alumnus, Itavelenikomwene Kamenye, stated that walking through the doors of a corrugated iron classroom was the best choice she has ever made and was able to walk away fulfilled.
“When I came to Hatika, it was because of a simple call to learn computer skills, which I believe would help me in the future. What I did not realise at the time was that this would become more than a learning centre. This became a foundation of my confidence, growth, and a future in the corporate world,” said Kamenye.
She added that she had gained practical skills that she uses daily in her professional life, and the knowledge and encouragement she received have enabled her to navigate the working space.
She encouraged the current cohort to take studies seriously and work towards achieving their goals.
She indicated that the Hatika Adult Education Centre plays a vital role in transforming lives through education, as it improves literacy, promotes employment and entrepreneurship, strengthens community relationships, and empowers individuals to contribute positively to society.
The centre demonstrates how adult education can be a powerful tool for community development and social change.
