The board of directors of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Fisheries Monitoring Control and Surveillance Coordination Centre (MCSCC) has been reappointed by SADC Ministers during a meeting held on Friday in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The reappointment includes a second term for board chairperson Stanley Ndara of Namibia and other board members, ensuring continuity in leadership and the centre’s mandate.
A statement released by the minister also indicated that the ministers approved the appointment of a qualified candidate from Zambia as the new executive director for a four-year term, with a contingency plan to appoint a candidate from Mozambique should the Zambian candidate be unavailable.
The meeting reaffirmed the region’s commitment to sustainable fisheries management, stronger regional cooperation and the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. The ministers further supported efforts to strengthen the Regional Register of Fishing Vessels and phase out illegal monofilament nets and other destructive fishing gear to protect aquatic ecosystems and support fishing communities across the SADC region.
