Two taxi drivers were reportedly held at gunpoint and robbed of their vehicles and cash last week by passengers they had picked up.
The Windhoek City Police have thus advised drivers to be vigilant at all times when loading passengers.

In a statement issued by assistant superintendent Hileni Wilhem, taxi drivers were warned to refrain from transporting problematic passenger and those who appear to be under the influence of alcohol.

Wilhem said a driver was robbed of his car and N$600 at gunpoint by two unknown males. He said the two passengers stopped a taxi in Hakahana and asked to be dropped off in Damara location in Katutura.

“When the driver reached the destination, the suspects pulled out a firearm and ordered the taxi driver to get out of the car,” said Wilhem, adding that the driver said the suspects had a toy gun as it broke when he tried to wrestle it from them.

The thugs then pulled out a knife and drove off with his taxi. A case of robbery and theft of a motor vehicle was opened but no arrest was made.The taxi is a silver Toyota Corolla sedan with taxi number G522 and registration number N161 931W.

In a similar incident, a taxi driver was held at gunpoint by two unknown passengers immediately after they got into the taxi.
“The taxi was later found abandoned close to Hakahana service station. An amount of about N$400 was also missing. No arrest has been made.”
