Six of eight suspected drug dealers arrested early last week by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Namibian Police that conducted a series of well-coordinated operations in Lüderitz were all denied bail last Friday when they appeared in the Lüderitz Magistrate’s Court.
The eight suspects all face charges of dealing in dependence-producing drugs.
Magistrate Peingondjabi Shipo presided.
Prosecutor Maxine Krohne said bail was denied because of the public outcry, and also to allow for further police investigations. The court took into account the concerns of the public, as drug related offences have become a daily occurrence in the area.
The courtroom was packed with interested members of the public.
Among the suspects are one woman and two suspects aged 15 and 17 years of age.
The latter two who are by law minors were released in the care of their guardians while the other six suspects are to remain in police custody
The suspects were arrested with 65 grams of cannabis valued at N$195, Mandrax tablets valued at N$635 and crack cocaine worth N$720.
The case of two of the suspects, a 32-year-old man and another man 42 years old – found in possession of three units of crack cocaine – was postponed to October 4.
The 17-year-old was found with 15 grams of cannabis with a street value of N$45. His case was postponed to September 1.
A 48-year-old suspect was found in possession of 10 grams of cannabis with a street value N$30, and her case was postponed to October 13, while a 45-year-old suspect from Aus was also found in possession of cannabis.
