The eastern town of Gobabis will be a hive of activity this weekend when the much-anticipated clash of champions see them drill each other at the Gobabis Turf Club horse racing course tomorrow.
Several locally bred and imported thoroughbred horses are ready to line up in the starting gates and tension is mounting amongst horse owners and their respective jockeys who are eying the lucrative prizes at stake.
With close to 100 horses expected to line up, all eyes will be fixed on new kid on the block, Winning Edge, from the Beutista Turf Club stable owned by Daniel Beukes.
The seven-year-old gilding announced his arrival on the local scene with breathtaking performances never witnessed in our neck of the woods in a long time. So far, Winning Edge claimed podium places in each and every race it entered.
Fresh from his victory in Rehoboth last month, the Kimberly-born horse is firm favourite to show his competitors a clean pair of hooves in the shorter and middle distance races and 1 000m and 1 600m sprints.
With four races still to go before the curtain comes down on the domestic horse racing calendar year – many horse owners are sharpening their animals to accumulate as many points as they can, going into the finals.
Event organizers are expecting a bumper line-up with horses coming from neigbouring Botswana, hosts Gobabis, and Omaruru, Rehoboth, Keetmanshoop, Otjombinde, Epukiro and Aminuis.
Gates open at 12h00 sharp. Entrance fee is set at N$30 per adult and N$10 for children. Refreshments are available at designated stalls inside the venue.
