What started as a normal school day for a 10-year-old boy came to a sad end when his life was cut short after being hit by a car on his way from school.

The boy was heading home from school on Wednesday when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle as he was crossing the B1 road that passes through Keetmanshoop.

The boy, whose name could not be revealed as his next of kin were yet to be informed, was allegedly crossing the road at the zebra crossing when a Mercedes Benz sedan, with South African registration number, hit him. He died on the spot.

Detective Chief Inspector Coleen Brandt told New Era it was not clear whether the driver was speeding or not, saying the police were still investigating the incident.

“It’s a 70km per hour zone,” she said.
Brandt indicated there are clear signs on both sides of the road instructing drivers what to do once they approach the area and she expects all drivers to adhere to signs, especially yielding to pedestrians.

She pointed out that the signs are however not followed, as it has become a norm that the pedestrians sometimes stand and wait for the cars to pass, while it’s supposed to be the other way round.

The corpse was taken to the Keetmanshoop mortuary, while the driver was taken to hospital for observation as he was in shock.
