The Rosh Pinah zinc mine says it will probe allegations of racial discrimination at the mine.
The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) southern regional office last week accused the mine of discrimination and victimization of its black workers, among other allegations.

In a petition handed to the mine management the union said the mine appoints and promotes workers based on skin colour and that only whites occupy management positions.

The union also accused the mine of paying its black workers salaries that are lower than those of their white counterparts, while they occupy the same positions.

The mine’s engagement manager Kondja Kaulinge confirmed receipt of the petition, saying the mine will get to the bottom of the charges as soon as possible.

“Rosh Pinah notes the serious allegations set out in the petition and has commenced with an immediate investigation,” he said.
Kaulinge said the mine values all of its workers, adding: “Our people are our greatest asset.”
He said the mine aims to provide clear and attractive career paths with a safe and healthy workplace free of discrimination and harassment.

He said the mine enforces a policy of equal opportunity at all levels of business and upholds the International Labour Organisation (ILO) declaration on fundamental principles and rights at work.

Despite the union demanding the mine management respond to the petition within five working days, Kaulinge said that an official response to the allegations would only be possible by the end of this month.
