A one-year and 11-month-old baby died shortly after swallowing eenyandi fruits (diospyros mespiliformis) at Onghwiyu village on Friday, Inspector Slogan Matheus from the Police Public Relations Department told the media at the weekly crime briefing on Sunday. The victim is Silvanus Haufiku and his next of kin have been informed of the tragedy.
At Egambo village in the Ohangwena Region a 47-year old woman was reportedly raped on Thursday by a 22-year-old man. The man allegedly found the victim walking in the veld from the cuca shops, grabbed her and dragged her into the bushes, where he had sexual intercourse without her consent. The man has been arrested and was expected to appear in the Eenhana Magistrate Court on Monday.
A member of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) apparently shot himself in Karasburg on Friday with an official AK-47 semi-automatic rifle. He died on the spot. It is alleged Musweu Michael Matomola, 29, a private by rank was on duty when he took an AK-47 and shot himself in the head. He did not leave a suicide note. His next of kin have been informed.
An eight-year-old boy was accidently shot on Saturday with the pistol of a 37-year-old man who lives in their neighbourhood in Havana in Windhoek. The man was allegedly shooting illegally in the air earlier that day and is suspected to have left one bullet in the chamber. When he went to the victim’s house, the bullet went off and struck the boy – who was playing nearby – on the buttocks. The boy was taken to Katutura State Hospital where he is receiving medical treatment. The man was promptly arrested and was due to appear in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
On Saturday a 30-year-old man died after he was allegedly stabbed with a knife by his brother-in-law in Freedom Land, Katutura. It is alleged an argument erupted at home between the two, which resulted in the suspect stabbing the victim in the neck with a knife. The deceased has been identified as Vaino Johannes, 30. He died on the spot. The suspect is known, but he fled the scene and is still at large.
