Two brothers died instantly on Tuesday night when the Toyota VVTi they were travelling in hit the trailer of a Scania truck.
The accident occurred on the Ongwediva-Ondangwa road at around 22h00. The truck driver who was the sole occupant of the truck escaped unharmed.
According to Constable Frieda Shikole of the Namibian Police Public Relations Division in Oshana Region, the Ongwediva-bound pickup rammed into the trailer of the Scania truck when it made a U-turn.
Shikole said the two brothers, identified as Mbwale Patrick, 29, who was the driver and Nikodemus Elago, 31, the passenger, were both employees of a prominent businessperson in the north, Steve Nambila.
The next of kin have already been informed.
A case of culpable of homicide and reckless and negligent driving has been opened and investigations into the matter continue.
“The police in Ongwediva have opened a case and once the investigation is complete, the docket will be sent to the prosecutor general for a decision,” said Shikole.
She said the Toyota VVTi pickup is a write-off . It was travelling from Ongwediva heading to Ondangwa, while the truck was coming from Ondangwa heading to Ongwediva.
The accident attracted a huge number of onlookers who described the incident as shocking and scary because the deceased were mutilated by the impact of the collision.
Eyewitness said the pickup was “too close” when the truck made a U-turn and it was almost impossible to avoid the collission.
“I don’t know why the truck had to suddenly make a U-turn in the middle of the road, since the pickup was right behind it. But eish, it was a horrific accident that you wouldn’t want to see ever again,” said an onlooker who alerted New Era about the accident.
He urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules at all times.
