Who else would you be?

Home Youth Corner Who else would you be?

Every morning when you wake up and look in the mirror, what do you see? What do you like about the person you see in the mirror? Do you wish you were someone else? There was a certain advert on television that I loved; a number of people where asked what they the hated about themselves, it took less than five seconds for them to give not one but a list of things that they hated about themselves. They were then asked to mention one thing they love about themselves; on average it took them a minute to give an answer which most were not even confident about.  How long did it take you to answer the two questions I asked at the beginning?

It may appear simple but how you perceive yourself is one of the most important determinants of how far you will go in life in terms of success. It also affects the quality of your relationships. Some people wake up every day, look in the mirror and wish they could change what is wrong. They do not bother to look for one tiny bit of what is right, let alone embrace it. They wish they looked like someone else and some have gone to extreme extends of cosmetic surgery just to look like someone else. Well, here is the hard truth; there is never going to be another you and you will never be someone else. There is something right in all of us.
We all have different physical features, different ways of thinking, potentials, different talents and abilities which makes everyone of us a rare and unique individual. Our most valuable characteristics are hardly these that meet the eye but rather deep inside us. The challenge is to find the best in you than living your whole life wishing and trying to be someone else. You have a personal story, a past and a future that is different from anyone else. You do not have any other choice than to be the best that you can be. Have pride in your dreams, goals and all that you have achieved so far. Keep focus on what you want in life rather than comparing yourself to others. Every morning when you wake up, appreciate what you have and embrace your whole self without looking in the mirror. You are more than the appearance that meets the eye.
There is nothing wrong in admiring others but it is not beneficial to wish you were them. Often we need role models and mentors but it does not mean we should become them. Each one of us have a different purpose that none else is going to fulfil for us. The challenge is not to be better than the rest but to be the best version of yourself. You are not in a completion with anyone, and none is competing with you. You decide whether you want to be the best that you can, or a better version of someone else.
