Home Youth Corner The search is on for the Queen’s Young Leaders

The Queen’s Young Leaders programme is searching for inspirational young peoplebetween the ages of 18 and 29 to receive an award and become the Queen’s Young Leader for their achievements in transforming their own lives and the lives of others in their communities.

This life changing programme is a new unique initiative that aims to enable young people to step up as leaders and improve the lives of people across the Commonwealth. It has been established by The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust and runs in partnership with Comic Relief and the Royal Commonwealth Society in honour of The Queen’s 60-year contribution to the Commonwealth. For the first time this year to 2018, At least one young person from 53 Commonwealth countries, including Namibia will receive a Queen’s Young Leaders Award.

Professor Peter Katjavivi welcomed the important initiative by Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust and its partners as the focal person for the Commonwealth encouraging young Namibians to take part. “I hope young Namibians will take full advantage of the Queen’s Young Leader programme and use it to improve themselves and in the process contribute to the wider goals of our country’s developmental endeavours. After all, young people are our future,” says Katjavivi. The Namibia National Students Organisation’s (NANSO) Secretary General, Sharonice Busch, alsocalls on fellow young leaders from Namibia and the rest of the Commonwealth member states to apply to this programme with vigour and zeal.

“Not everyone agrees that leadership can be taught but all know that leadership can be learned, and through such programmes we can produce the finest leaders that are able to transform the vision of the Commonwealth and ensure that the challenges, we as Young Leaders, face are dealt with the tenacity and capacity required,” says Busch. To achieve its aim of discovering, celebrating and supporting inspirational young people to lead the way across the Commonwealth, the programme  comprises of  two elements such as Awardsto recognise the achievements of 240 inspirational young people and provide support enabling them to take up leadership roles and inspire future leaders,  and Grants to support organisations in selected countries across the Commonwealth that work with young people to transform their lives.
