WINDHOEK – Namibia’s leading boxing promoter Nestor Tobias and the now internationally-acclaimed MTC Nestor ‘Sunshine’ Tobias Boxing & Fitness Academy are bringing the eagerly awaited ‘Local is Lekker’ boxing bonanza to boxing fans this coming Saturday.
The extravaganza is slated for the Independence Arena in Katutura on Saturday. It was exactly November 24, 2001 at the same venue where Tobias, then a rookie boxing promoter, successfully made his debut when he promoted his first ever professional boxing bonanza, featuring now retired Frans ‘Rambo’ Hantindi, who went on to win the World boxing Association (WBA ) Pan African Welterweight title after trouncing Zimbabwean opponent Farai Kachigwada via a 7th round knockout.
Now thirteen years down the line, the academy returns to its roots and promises local boxing fans a veritable treat with some thrilling boxing action on the cards when the hard-punching Jatoorora ‘The Sting’ Tjingaveta confronts compatriot Peter Malakia in the main bout – a Junior Welterweight 10-rounder. Also topping the bill on the day will be Walter Kutondokwa who squares off against Theophilus Vatileni in the Middleweight division over 10-rounds. Mike Shonena will trade blows with Tommy Hango in a Welterweight bout over six rounds, to mention but a few of the undercards.
“This would indeed be history in the making, since the academy came from nothing and it’s now one of the best academies internationally and continentally. We have over the years managed to produce top-class world rated boxers, including world champions,” Tobias says. “We are coming back home to thank our people who made it possible for us and are determined to show the people that what they have invested in us was worthwhile and we are here to stay.” The gates open at 10h00 with live music performances by The Dogg, Dj Chin Chila & Dj Alba.
