WINDHOEK – Convicted murderer and retired school teacher David De Jay committed suicide through a drug overdose over the weekend.
It is alleged De Jay, who was recently convicted of the murder of his wife of 15 years, Tina de Jay, one day before Valentine’s Day in 2009, died of an overdose of his cancer medicine. He already told Judge Alfred Siboleka during his trial that he suffered from cancer.
Details surrounding his suicide were sketchy at the time of going to press with the Namibian Police only saying the department of prisons was conducting its investigations into the matter.
The former Keetmanshoop schoolteacher was being held at the Windhoek Prison’s cells for trial-awaiting prisoners. He remained in custody since his arrest shortly after the murder.
During his trial De Jay maintained to the end his wife was killed by robbers during an outing to the Fish River near Keetmanshoop.
He was supposed to return to court tomorrow for submissions on the sentence to be imposed.
De Jay was represented by Boris Isaacks during his trial and State Advocate Palmer Khumalo prosecuted.
