RUNDU-based Cuca Tops defeated cross-town rivals Julinho Sporting 2-0 in the final of the North-East First Division-leg of the 2014 Bidvest Namibia Cup played over the weekend at the Rundu Sports Stadium.
According to Mpasi Haingura, chairperson of the North-East First Division League, the draw for the competition was done last week Monday and action started on Friday afternoon with Julinho Sporting taking on Eastern Chiefs. After a three-all draw after 90 minutes of play, Sporting emerged the 5-4 winners on penalties to advance to the quarterfinals. In the first match of Saturday, Oshikango Chiefs were beaten 2-3 by Katima Wanderers, while Young Rangers lost 2-1 to Ohangwena Nampol and Chief Santos managed to beat Tsumeb rivals Benfica 3-1.
In quarterfinal action, Bingo lost 1-0 to Cuca Tops and Ondangwa United lost 3-1 to King Fischer, while Katima Wanderers also lost 3-1 to Sporting. Nampol Ohangwena then lost 4-2 to Santos in the final quarterfinal match. In the semi-finals, Rundu’s Cuca Tops took on Katima Mulilo’s King Fischer and the former prevailed 2-1 to advance to the final, while in the other semi-final match, Sporting scored an emphatic 3-1 win over Santos to book an all-Rundu final. In the final match at the Rundu Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Cuca Tops took on Julinho Sporting and it was Tops who emerged the winners with a convincing 2-0 victory. Both Tops and Sporting now qualify for the last 32 of the 2014 Bidvest Namibia Cup. According to the chairperson of the Bidvest Namibia Cup Organising Committee Roger Kambatuku, the 2014 Bidvest Namibia Cup will officially be launched with the draw for the competition proper tomorrow at the Supporters Sports Bar at 11h00 in Windhoek.
