WINDHOEK – The Namibian Police this week started advertising for the recruitment of young people interested in become police officers. Although for now the drive is to recruit 1 000 interested people, the police say 6 000 more police are needed to keep law and order in the country.
“The target is to have 20 000 police officers around the country … currently there are 14 000. We have a shortage of 6 000 police officers,” head of the Police Public Relations Division, Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi told New Era yesterday. The deputy commissioner hinted at an additional recruitment of 1 000 cadets next year, depending on the availability of funds.
The current advertisements are for 1 000 cadets country-wide to fill about 71 cadet constable positions in each of the 14 regions.
Some of the requirements are that candidates should be in possession of an authentic Grade 12 certificate with at least 20 points or higher in six subjects, including an E symbol in English.
Candidates must also have good knowledge of community-based programmes, good interpersonal relations and be willing to work with communities.
