WALVIS BAY – The police in the Erongo Region dished out traffic fines amounting to N$1.48 million to unruly road users during the festive season.

Besides the fines the police also fined 404 persons for speeding while 58 were arrested for drunk driving in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. This was revealed by the police chief for the Erongo Region, Commissioner Samuel //Hoebeb, during a media briefing held last week Thursday at the police headquarters in Walvis Bay.

According to //Hoebeb the police also suspended 34 vehicles from the road for being unroadworthy, while conducting sting operations at various roadblocks in the region.

“Nampol was visible at roadblocks, on beaches and all public places to protect our people and we can say that we had a very calm and safe festive season,” he said. The police also recovered stolen goods valued at N$400 000.

According to //Hoebeb, the recovered goods include 10 flat screen television sets and four laptops confiscated from suspect burglars. The items were recovered in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

Nampol also confiscated 45 boxes of counterfeit Remington Gold cigarettes from suspects. It is believed that the suspects tried to avoid the Swakopmund roadblock to smuggle the counterfeit cigarettes. However the police noticed and arrested the suspects. The cigarettes are valued at about N$200 000 and were allegedly transported through the Zambezi Region to Erongo Region.
