A journey from Ruacana to law

A journey from Ruacana to law

From a small northern Namibian town to the halls of legal practice, a student’s journey proves that ambition surpasses circumstance. Dula Melania, an 18-year-old second-year LLB student at the University of Namibia, has made her mark as Deputy School Representative at the School of Law.

Her story began in Ruacana, where access to legal resources and role models was limited. Melania reflected on her upbringing, stating that the world of law felt impossible and that becoming a lawyer once seemed like a dream too far to reach.

Despite these challenges, she chose to pursue law not only for herself but to prove the possibility for others who share a similar background. “Pursuing law is more than just a personal goal; it is a way to show that even students from remote regions can access opportunities and succeed,” she stated.

She works hard with the hope that other young people from disadvantaged backgrounds will be inspired to follow in her footsteps.

Melania spoke boldly in inclusion as a driving force for the way she views the future of the legal profession, she states that broadening access is not only the responsibility of institutions, but also of those already within the field. “The responsibility to broaden access does not rest solely on institutions, but also on current and future members of the profession,” she says. Creating an inclusive legal space means nurturing awareness, supporting peers, and ensuring that opportunities are not limited by background or geography.

A defining moment for her came from Senior Counsel Sisa Namandje, whose words hit deeply and stayed with her, as she narrates his statement. “I never wanted to be just a lawyer; I wanted to be the lawyer. Determination and passion can turn dreams into reality, even when the odds seem against you.”

For her, this was a powerful reminder to reach for excellence, she remains committed to growing and giving back because for the young 18-year-old, success is not only about personal achievement but also about proving that where you come from does not define where you can go.
