Namibia’s ambassador to China Elia Kaiyamo has called on African countries to invest in information access, and thus close the digital divide.
He said this during an online workshop on innovation, science, technology and the contemporary world on Friday.
The workshop took place under the theme ‘Innovation, Science and Technology in a Contemporary World’.
It was organised by the Information Africa Organisation, and attended by representatives of various African countries.
“It is my appeal for our African governments to invest in ensuring that all people have access to information and bridge the digital divide,” Kaiyamo stated.
“We need to ensure that people from all socio-economic backgrounds can access vital technologies and information,” he emphasised.
“Efforts must be made to bridge the digital divide and ensure that marginalised communities and rural areas can also benefit from this advancement,” Kaiyamo noted.
He said innovation, science and technology help fuel a country’s development, which he believes African countries need to utilise as transformation is taking place.
“Innovation, science and technology are the driving forces behind the transformation of any country, and I think as Africans, we need to take advantage of the current revolution, and make sure that we do not lag behind,” he said.
Innovation, science and technology possess the ability to improve industries, communication and quality of life, Kaiyamo said.
