Amutenya’s vision for Namibia’s grassroots sports

Amutenya’s vision for Namibia’s grassroots sports

In a sports world often dominated by top clubs and pro leagues, one man is quietly building a bridge for those who are left behind. Shalom Amutenya, founder of the Dream Social Football League (DSFL), now turning into the Dream Sports Network (DSN), is leading a movement that brings new hope to young Namibians through sports.

His journey into sports development started with a simple realisation that sport can be a tool for transformation.

Growing up, he observed how easily young people could fall into destructive habits when lacking purpose or opportunity. Driven to offer a positive alternative, he founded the Omaandje Sports Club in 2012 and later expanded his vision to develop a community-based league that would educate, empower and uplift young athletes.

Since then, the DSFL has grown into one of Windhoek’s most active community leagues, with over 600 registered players and coaches across 12 teams.

Many participants had never played in a structured competition before, but the league has provided them with discipline, exposure and a sense of community. Its growth also reflects the leadership of young volunteers, including Amutenya’s niece, who has taken charge of organising matches and managing logistics.

This exemplifies the empowerment the league aims to achieve. Operating outside of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) structures has been challenging. Funding remains the biggest obstacle, with the league relying on small registration fees, donations and personal contributions to cover expenses such as referees, trophies and field rentals.

“It hasn’t been easy, but what keeps us going is the impact we see in young people’s lives,” Amutenya said. Despite these financial challenges, the DSFL has achieved tangible results. Several players have advanced to NFA-affiliated clubs, and two DSFL teams joined the NFA’s third division last year. The switch to DSN now marks a new era, offering structured opportunities across multiple sports.

The Dream Social Football League (DSFL) will hold its annual End Year Function on 1 November 2025 at Khomasdal Stadium under the theme Celebrating the Dream, Inspiring the Future.

The esteemed event marks the official rebranding from DSFL to DSN, expanding the league’s scope beyond football to encompass basketball, netball, volleyball and tennis.

The celebration will unite players, coaches, officials, partners, sponsors and community supporters to reflect on the 2025 season’s accomplishments, recognise excellence and reveal future expansion plans.

Amutenya hopes that with the proper support, the Dream Sports Network can grow into a national platform that nurtures talent and strengthens communities.

“The dream is clear, the passion is there, but what we need now is the financial muscle to make it a reality,” he emphasised.

In a country where opportunities for young athletes are often limited, Shalom Amutenya’s vision serves as a reminder that the heart of sport beats most strongly at the grassroots. Through DSN, he is not just forming teams but also building dreams and creating a future where every young Namibian has the chance to shine. -hnalupe@nepc.com.na
